Journey to Recovery and Resilience Through NeuroTechR3’s AI-driven Gamified Rehabilitation Therapy

This article captures Sydney’s motor improvements, his dedication to his recovery, and the central role that R3THA’s interactive therapy has played in his rehabilitation process. By Maddi Niebanck.

How does Sydney describe himself after months of doing interactive therapy? As a confident, determined, and reluctant “Rockstar”.

Before his stroke in February of 2021 which paralyzed his right side, Sydney was a successful dentist. Although his recuperation and rehabilitation have been challenging and at times emotionally overwhelming, he has relied on his faith to maintain his motivation to regain dexterity and fine motor skills in his right hand, his goal being to return to doing what he was passionate about: practicing dentistry.

“I didn’t want people to pity me,” he says. As stroke survivors we struggle mentally each and every day, wrestling with physical limitations and social isolation. I remember in the early days after my injury, feeling angry and upset, wondering, why did this happen to me, and what did I do to deserve this? But our recovery from trauma begins first and foremost with our mindset/ mental outlook/self-awareness. Without a positive attitude/outlook, how can we expect to put in the work and see results?

Sydney has been putting in the work, logging hours of repetitions which are translating into major gains.

Since Sydney began using R3THATM, he has stayed committed and taken his recovery into his own hands by setting tangible goals and following the prescribed exercise regimen to achieve them. ‘“My goal now is to be able to straighten my arm, and turn the bicep off from firing,” he says.

“When playing the games you don’t realize that to play effectively you need to execute certain movements and (R3THA) prompts you to move in a way that you may not have envisioned, achieving better movement overall,” he adds.

And his hard work is certainly paying off. Sydney has seen some significant improvements since starting with R3THA. His fingers can straighten out, and he admits he even finds himself now incorporating his affected hand into daily life activities like brushing his hair and teeth. He can also drive again, a game changer for independence. His range of motion has improved, and he can now reach behind his head, a movement that once used to feel like a distant dream.

“The objective is normalcy,” Sydney says. And normalcy in this case is giving Sydney confidence to persevere and not give up. Confidence to train and regain.
